The Glover Hornet armoured car is based on the chassis of the heavy-duty military Land Rover Defender (4 x 4) vehicle chassis which is already in service with a large number of armed forces around the world and was available powered by a V8 petrol engine or a turbocharged diesel engine.
The ballistically tested steel armour plate hull of the Glover Hornet will defeat NATO 7.62 mm machine gun attack firing at right angles to the target. All welded seams have reinforcing backing strips and all openings have ballistic overlaps. The floor of the vehicle is made of high-yield steel which offers protection against multiple grenade attack. Internally operated fold-down shields with vision blocks are standard equipment for urban situations.
The vehicle configuration is similar to the standard Land Rover with the engine at the front, commander and driver in the centre (left or right-hand drive models are available) and a one-man low-profile machine gun turret on the roof.
The commander and driver each have a forward-opening door. In the upper part of the door is a large vision area and to the immediate front both commander and driver have protected vision areas. Internally operated drop-down flaps with an observation slit offer additional protection.
The low-profile one-man machine gun turret, also designed by Glover Webb, is armed with a 7.62 mm machine gun with manual elevation from -10 to +50°. The turret has a full 360° traverse under manual control with the weapon being aimed by a periscope sight to the left of the weapon. In addition, the turret is fitted with a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear with rectangular vision blocks provided in the sides and rear of the turret for all-round observation. Turret-mounted searchlight and 2 x 4 66 mm or 76 mm electrically operated smoke grenade dischargers are standard options for the turret.
Optional equipment for the Hornet includes gun ports, run-flat tyres, sand tyres, an extended range fuel tank, a self-recovery winch, HF/UHF/VHF radios, a barricade remover, passive night vision equipment and urban police equipment.
In service in undisclosed countries in Africa and the Middle East. No longer being actively marketed.
