Development/Description

The Warrior LMT105 light tank is being developed by Alvis Vehicles as a private venture specifically for the export market.

It consists of a modified Alvis Vehicles Warrior infantry fighting vehicle chassis, of which over 1,000 have been built and are currently in service with the Kuwait Land Forces and the UK, fitted with the latest South African LIW LMT 105 turret system which has been developed for the export market.

The LMT 105 turret system is armed with a stabilised low recoil LIW 105 mm GT7/51 calibre rifled tank gun firing standard NATO ammunition. A 7.62 mm machine gun is mounted coaxial with the main armament and a similar weapon can be installed on the turret roof for air defence purposes.

The commander and gunner have stabilised day/ night sights which enable targets to be engaged while the vehicle is stationary.

Tne LMT 105 turret has been developed as a private venture by LIW and has already completed its trials installed on the Reumech OMC Rooikat (8 x 8) armoured car. The turret builds on experience in the development and production of the 76 mm turret for the Rooikat armoured car used by the South African National Defence Force.

Combat loaded, Warrior 105 mm would weigh around 29 tonnes which would enable it to be moved around existing road/bridge networks easier than an MBT in the 40 to 50 tonne class.

If response from the marketplace is favourable, then the next step would be the building of a prototype system which could be done at very short notice as both the chassis and turret already exist.

The LMT 105 turret system is also fitted to the ASCOD 105 light tank covered earlier in this section.
