The Chivunk is developed by the Technology Center of the Brazilian Army CTEX (Centro Tecnológico del Ejército Brasileño) in response to the strategic and operational requirements of the rapid reaction forces (airborne brigade and special forces brigade).
The vehicle is designed to provide high mobility in any terrain, it can be transported by medium helicopters (on external hook) or military transport aircraft, such as C-130 Hercules or EDS KC-390 (up to four vehicles ready for descent by parachute).
The prototype of the Chivunk air-transportable vehicle was evaluated and approved by the Test Act No. 019/11-CAEx, and the project is currently at the final stage of testing of a pilot batch consisting of ten vehicles ordered in 2013 for R$ 3.2 million (about US$ 1.3 million), which were manufactured by Ceppe Equipamentos Industriales e Comércio Ltda. in the period from 2013 to 2017.
The tests should be completed before February 2018. During their conduct, vehicles of the paratroopers and special forces will be involved, including the launch of the KC390 military transport aircraft.
After completion of the tests, the Brazilian army plans to purchase 40 such vehicles.
The Chivunk design has excellent versatility, so the vehicle can be used as reconnaissance, take part in assault, transport personnel and cargo, evacuate the wounded and perform other functions, which makes Chivunk primarily a special operational force and parachute paratroopers.
The all-wheel drive 4x4 and the hard independent suspension of all four wheels give the car exceptional mobility.
In addition, the reinforced tubular frame is designed to withstand the impact when falling from a low height (vehicles can be installed to drop two on one pallet in order to occupy less space).
The vehicle can carry three soldiers and can be used as a platform for towing a 120-mm mortar and transporting the standard weapons of the paratroopers, including two anti-tank grenade launchers Alac (disposable containers, caliber 81 mm) and a 7.62-mm Mag machine gun. It is capable of carrying up to 500 kg of payload and has a range of 590 km.
