Transmission for vehicles in the 20-30 tonne class.
The Renk HSWL 295 TM is a hydromechanical power shift, reversing and steering transmission with five forward and three reverse gears.
Its first production application is in the Giat Industries' Leclerc MBTs and armoured recovery vehicles ordered by the United Arab Emirates in early 1993. In this application it is coupled to an MTU 883 12-cylinder diesel engine developing 1,100 kW (1,340 hp). The United Arab Emirates have ordered 436 vehicles including variants and in 1998, the French Army placed its first order for 15 armoured recovery vehicles which will also have the EuroPowerPack. For these 436 vehicles a total of 480 EuroPowerPacks were purchased.
Operation is fully and semi-automatic and the transmission can be mounted to the engine in a U-configuration. Mechanical brakes are built on to the output shafts.
Propulsion drive is via a torque converter with lock-up clutch and reversing gear to be shifted under load with planetary gear sets, multidisc brakes and clutches.
Steering drive is infinitely variable by a hydrostatic-hydrodynamic superimposed steering system.
The transmission brake is a combined hydrodynamic-mechanical brake system as service brake, parking and auxiliary brakes.
The central oil supply consists of a built-in reservoir, pumps, filters and valves. A connection for the oil heat exchanger is provided.
Controls consist of an electric remote control for gearshifting and reversing, mechanical actuation of steering, service brake and emergency drive second forward and reverse when the current fails. A power take-off is provided for two cooling fans.
Options of the Renk HSWL 295 TM transmission include connection cable between gear selector, electronic control unit, transmission and vehicle output gear-type couplings, final drives, sprocket drums and external testing device.
In production for the Giat Industries' Leclerc MBT ordered by the United Arab Emirates, with first production vehicles completed in 1994. In 1995, the EuroPowerPack was installed in the Vickers Defence Systems' Challenger 2E (based on the Challenger 2 MBT used by Oman and the UK) and in 1997 the EuroPowerPack was installed in the US General Dynamics Land Systems' M1A2 MBT for the export market.
