The Heavy Tank Recovery vehicle (DCL), directly derived from the LECLERC combat tank, is an extremely mobile tracked armoured recovery vehicle. It can circulate in an NBC environment, disengage itself by its own means, and perform safety missions, i.e. evacuate an immobilized tank in a battle zone or disengage an overturned or damaged tank.

In addition, it can perform repair missions (i.e. remove and replace a turret, change a GMP, perform all-terrain or on-road towing) and finally terrain summary preparation missions (i.e. clear a route, prepare a heavy duty work cell or create a maintenance area).

This 60-ton vehicle operated by a crew of three is fitted with a crane system, winches and a clearance and support system. It shares its main sub-assemblies with the tank: power plant for the EAU version, running gear, air-conditioning and NBC protection system, hydraulic and electric generators. The DCL on-board equipment may be adapted to the operational mission: in particular a three-mode K2D mine clearance kit, tooling and spare parts, including a complete spare power plant.
