It is understood that this system was developed in the 1990s by the Shahid Bagheri Industries, which is part of the Aerospace Industries Organisation.

It is considered possible that the 333 mm unguided surface-to-surface artillery rocket used in the Falaq-2 artillery rocket system is related to the longer-range SHAHIN 1 and SHAHIN 2 systems.

The Falaq-2 however, is much shorter and therefore carries less propellant and has a shorter range.

According to the Aerospace Industries Organization, the 333 mm rockets are 'designed for strike, attack and defence conditions'.

In addition it can be used for the 'destruction of artillery cannons, tank groups, gathering trenches, combat engineering equipment and damaging the command stations.'

The 333 mm (1-round) Falaq-2 system has been offered on the export market.

As of early 2008 there were no known export sales of this unguided rocket system.

The only known 333 mm Falaq-2 system fielded to date by Iran is based on a 4 × 4 jeep light cross-country vehicle with the engine at the front and two door fully enclosed cab in the centre.

Mounted on the rear of the chassis is a single tube-type launcher for the 333 mm rockets. Before the rockets are launched, two stabilisers are manually lowered to the ground one at each side at the rear of the vehicle, to provide a more stable firing platform.

The 333 mm spin stabilised rockets have a maximum range of 10,800 m and are fitted with a nose-mounted fuze. Propellant used is of the double base type and there are eight nozzles at the rear of the rocket.

The same chassis is used as the launch platform for the Iranian Falaq-1, which has six 240 mm rockets in the ready-to-launch position in a frame type launcher on the rear. This launches 240 mm unguided surface-to-surface rockets to a maximum range of 10,000 m. Details of this are given in a separate entry.
