The BMD-4M airborne combat vehicle is a modernized version of the BMD-4 and has a number of improvements over its predecessor in hull, power pack, suspension and other.
The first demonstration of BMD-4M was on 21 March 2008, during a presentation at Kurganmashzavod.
March 3, 2015 Airborne troops of Russia got 12 BMD-4M. These BMD-4M were transferred to the 106th Airborne Division for the tests and evolutions.
The state tests were completed in May 2015.
BMD-4M demonstrated on Red Square on the Victory Parade in 2015.
This vehicle is also proposed for export customers.
The new vehicle is unified with BMP-3 by 80%. This fact significantly simplifies the production, operation and maintenance of the vehicle.
It is powered by a more powerful UTD-29 diesel engine, developing 500 hp. The same engine is used on the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle. It is a more modern and more powerful engine, comparing with the 2V-06 diesel of the BMD-3 and BMD-4. The BMD-4M has improved mobility over its predecessors. This ACV has a hydropneumatic suspension with variable height control. It also allows the vehicle to lean in any direction. Such suspension also allows the vehicle to be paradropped on platforms. The BMD-4M is amphibious. On water it is propelled by two waterjets. The Il-76 cargo aircraft can carry two of these ACVs.
BMD-4M has a Bakhcha turret, developed by the Tula State Unitary Enterprise "Instrument Design Bureau". The same module is used in the previous version of the BMD-4. Bakhcha turret almost completely unified with the armament of the BMP-3, they use the same weapons, ammunition and sighting and computing systems.
Armament of the BMD-4M includes:
- 100-mm gun 2A70 (34 high-explosive rounds)
- 30-mm automatic cannon 2A72 (500 rounds)
- coaxial 7.62-mm PKT machine-gun (2000 shots)
- ATGM Arkan (4 guided missiles)
