The Romach 175 mm self-propelled gun is a modified version of the US-supplied United Defense LP Ground Systems Division (now is BAE Systems Land Systems) 175 mm M107 self-propelled artillery system fully described in a separate entry. The M107 was phased out of service with the US Army many years ago.
In addition to firing the standard US-developed 175 mm M437 series HE projectile to a maximum range of 32.7 km, it will also fire the special Extended Range Sub Calibre Mk 7 MOD 7 projectile, developed for Israel by the now defunct Space Research Corporation, which has a maximum range of 40 km.
As the weight of the Romach is almost the same as that of the US M107 system, it is probable that any modifications are limited to overall improvements in the areas of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Durability (RAM-D).
Some 175 mm M107 systems have been observed to be fitted with additional stowage boxes and a pintle-mounted 7.62 mm machine gun for local and anti-aircraft defence, which is mounted on the left side of the hull to the rear.
