An innovative protection concept, technical performance capabilities matching the requirements of modern land forces and the proven flexibility concept are the significant capabilities of the GRIZZLY, a working title for Krauss-Maffei Wegmanns newest vehicle development. With this vehicle, KMW is not only extending its product range in the tradition of a modern and competent systems engineering company, but at the same time closes a gap in the vehicle programme of the German Armed Forces. With a total weight of up to 25 tons, it is positioned between the DINGO 2 (12.5 tons) and the BOXER (33 tons) in Class 4 for armoured command and role-specific vehicles. It once again underlines the necessary consideration for the changed schedule of requirements of the Army and its needs in worldwide peace-keeping missions under NATO and UN command.
A pioneering aspect during the development was above all the idea to offer the soldiers maximum possible protection against the entire bandwidth of threats. Therefore the drivers area and crew compartment form a coherent safety cell which, in addition to ballistic threats and mines, also protects the crew from improvised explosive devices. Engine and transmission are ballistically protected as well.
KMW-developed special stiffening elements additionally protect the crew from injuries in the event of a roll-over accident. Engine and transmission are also ballistically protected. The vehicle provides space for up to ten fully equipped soldiers. It thus exceeds the 3 tons specified in the Request for Proposal by more than 50 percent.
To power the individual kits, the vehicle is equipped with a power-generating unit. In addition to its electrical capacity of more than 20 kW, it also ensures the engine-independent operation of the NBC ventilation and air-conditioning systems. The vehicle dimensions are designed to offer flexibility for the operational readiness of the vehicle. The vehicle is also airportable on the future A 400 M transport aircraft.
In order to keep the cost low while at the same time maintaining a high technological standard and versatile mission capabilities, the vehicle– as other established wheeled vehicles – is to be offered as a family vehicle. In addition to the highly protected transport version, it is also conceivable to provide ambulance or command post variants. The basis is the 6x6 Takker chassis from IVECO, which was specifically matched to the needs of the German Army and is scheduled for series production. However, it is also possible to build a smaller 4x4 model or an 8x8 type of correspondingly higher payload.
