Development/Description
The Slavin Plant of Israel Military Industries has been engaged in the design, development and production of passive armour kits for MBTs and other armoured fighting vehicles used by the Israel Defence Force for more than 20 years.
More recently it was one of only two companies to receive Israel Defence Force certification for ballistic materials to protect the USA MGeneral HMMWV(4x4) which is used in large numbers by the Israel Defence Force.
Further development of this has resulted in the Carmel ballistic add-on armour, kit for light tactical wheeled vehicles.
This provides complete protection against 7.62 mm and 0.30 in armour piercing ammunition as well as Claymore off-route mines.
It can be supplied in different kit configurations to provide the required level of ballistic protection defined by customers.
The kits armour plating is 20 to 22 mm thick and weighs 54/88 kg/m2. Windows are 71/91 mm thick and weigh 163/188 kg m2.
The Carmel protection kit was originally designed for the HMMWV with an armoured cabin secured on the vehicle chassis. The kit includes two doors on each side with two small windows or one large window in each door and two hatches in the roof.
Each of the two roof hatches can be replaced by a small cupola if required. As as option, the Carmel kit can also include under-body panels to provide protection against mines.
Although the Carmel add-on ballistic armour kit was developed for the AM General HMMWV (4 x 4), its design is such that it can be tailored to other shapes and sizes to satisfy a wide range of customer requirements.
Production. In service with Israel Defence Force.
