Development/Description
The LIW 90 mm gun, designated the GT 2, is essentially the French Giat Industries 90 mm F1 gun (see earlier in this section) manufactured under licence in South Africa.
The first production application was the 90 mm two-man turret installed on the Reumech OMC Eland 90 (4 x 4) armoured car but this manually operated turret was subsequently installed on the Reumech OMC Ratel (6 x 6) infantry fighting vehicle chassis.
The 90 mm gun GT 2 is a semi-automatic gun fitted with a double baffle muzzle brake with a 7.62 mm machine gun being mounted coaxially to the left. The weapon fires HEAT, HE, PRAC and Canister types of fixed ammunition.
Status
Production as required. In service with Morocco, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Most Eland vehicles have been phased out of service with the South African Defence force but the Ratel 90 remains in service in significant numbers.
