The Auverland A3 SL armoured personnel carrier (APC) was developed as a private venture by Auverland SA and is essentially their standard Auverland A3 (4 × 4) light cross-country vehicle fitted with an all-welded steel armour body.
Well over 5,000 of the standard unarmoured Auverland A3 (4 × 4) light vehicle have been manufactured for the home and export markets. Development of the Auverland A3 SL APC is complete and production can commence as soon as orders are placed.
Details of the baseline Auverland Type A3 (4 × 4) light vehicle are given in Jane's Military Vehicles and Logistics. This company was one of four awarded contracts for a single prototype of a vehicle to meet the PVP requirement. Following extensive trials the Auverland A3 (4 × 4) vehicle was selected. Full details of the Auverland PVP are given in a separate entry.
The layout of the Auverland A3 SL armoured personnel carrier is conventional, with the engine compartment at the front and the crew compartment at the rear. The all-welded steel hull provides the crew with protection against attack from 7.62 mm ball small arms fire.
The commander and driver are seated at the front of the vehicle with the driver on the left and the commander on the right. Both have a bulletproof window to their front and a door in the side that opens forwards. This is provided with a bulletproof window in its upper part.
The troop compartment is at the rear and entry to this is via a large door in the hull rear, which is provided with a bulletproof window with a firing port in its upper part. Additional firing ports and vision devices can be provided in the sides and rear of the rear compartment as required.
Standard equipment includes blackout lighting and towing hooks front and rear. It can also be fitted with a roof-mounted one-person central mount onto which a variety of weapons can be fitted including a 5.56, 7.62 or 12.7 mm machine gun, 20 mm cannon or even a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.
The design of the Auverland A3 SL armoured personnel carrier is such that it can be adapted for a number of other roles such as command post vehicle.
