Volvo military trucks, promoted as logistic supply trucks by the company, are essentially commercial products militarised as required. The primary range for military applications is the FM12, although FM9 models are readily available.
The FM12 replaced the earlier FL12 range, designations denoting cab type (FL/FM) and engine size (cubic capacity). The FM12 is available in two-, three- or four-axle chassis, and in a variety of drive, wheelbase and body configurations.
The chassis is a conventional C-section design with GVWs of up to 40 tonnes and GCWs of 60 tonnes available for rigid chassis. Tractor trucks are also available.
Motive power is provided by a Volvo D12C12-litre turbocharged and inter-cooled six-cylinder EURO III diesel engine with power output options of 340hp, 380hp, 420hp and 460hp. Transmission options include manual or semi- and fully automatic gearboxes. A single-speed transfer box is standard. Beam-type axles with leaf springs are supplemented with shock absorbers and anti-roll bars as required. Volvo produces the majority of its own driveline components in-house.
Specific militarisation options include cold-start and deep salt-water wading facilities. In conjunction with Ireland's Timoney Technology, Volvo has developed an 8 x 8 High Mobility FM12 fitted with Timoney independent coil spring suspension.
Volvo offers an armoured cab option for the FM range that has been blast-tested and verified by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).
An applique armour kit is attached to built-in fixing points. Depending on the level of protection required, the weight of a complete kit is around 1.5 to 1.6 tonnes, with loading on the original cab structure limited to around one tonne. The optional mine protection is designed for fixing directly to the chassis.
Volvo has an option contract with the FMV that allows for unlimited orders to be placed until the end of 2005.
Some special applications of the FM12 range can be made available as air-transportable by wide-body aircraft.
