Before the 80-es of the 20 century the 120mm was a typical calibre of the Russian mortars.
State the 80-es there has bees created the whole range of unique artillery systems which embodied features of the mortar and the howitzer. A peculiarity of such systems is the destructive power of the high-explosive fragmentation projectile at the target comparable with the effect of 152-155mm high-explosive fragmentation projectiles, and their capability of firing with all types of 120mm mortar shells of native and foreign origin.
The Nona-SVK self-propelled gun (SPG) is intended for destruction of artillery and mortar batteries, missile launchers, armored targets and control posts, for destroying and suppressing firing means and enemy manpower, uncovered and sheltered in field-type concealments, as well as for smoking (Minding) and lighting the locality.
The SPG is mounted on the amphibious armored chassis of BTR-80 (Russia) with the wheel arrangement of 8x8 and it can follow the tanks, freely cross pits, trenches and water obstacles. The Nona-SVK SPG is fitted with the 120mm 2A60 semi-automatic rifled gun having a combined breech mechanism and a pneumatic rammer and can deliver aimed direct and indirect fire without preliminary preparation of the fire position.
The additional weapons of the SPG include a 7.62 mm machine gun mounted on the turret roof, a smokescreen system, as well as a sight and vision devices.
