Patria Vehicles has recently developed the Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV) in close association with the Finnish Defence Force (PDF) to achieve a platform with greater mobility, payload, internal volume and protection than the current production XA-200 6x6 vehicles.
The first prototype of the AMV was completed in 2001 and has so far been ordered by Finland (24 units) and Poland (690 units). Finland has selected the AMV for its twin 120mm advanced mortar system (AMOS), while Poland will field a complete family of vehicles.
The first batch of AMVs for Poland will come from Finland; the rest will be built under licence in Poland. Variants will include: an infantry fighting vehicle fitted with an Oto Melara two-person turret armed with an ATK Gun Systems Company 30mm MK44 cannon and 7.62mm coaxial machine gun; an armoured personnel carrier (ARC) with remote-controlled 12.7mm machine gun; command and control; engineering and reconnaissance; ambulance; and recovery vehicles. There will also be a 6 x 6 reconnaissance model for Poland.
Patria offers potential AMV customers three variants: baseline, system platform and modular carrier with various power pack and armour packages available to meet different users' operational requirements.
The baseline AMV ARC, when fitted with a remote-controlled 12.7mm machine gun, is fully amphibious: two propellers drive the vehicle through water. It is also air-portable in a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. When fitted with a heavier weapon system, such as a two-person turret and full armour package, it can weigh up to 24 tonnes.
Standard equipment includes hydropneumatic suspension, fire-detection and -suppression system, powered steering, central tyre-inflation system, winch and environmental-control system.
