From 1962 to 1991, the plant was named "Pishchemash" and was a member of the "Kharkov Malyshev Plant" Industrial Group.
In January 2008, the Government of the Chechen Republic and the management of JSC AvtoVAZ signed an agreement according to which the assembly of VAZ cars began at the plant.
In 2008, on the basis of this enterprise, the Open Joint Stock Company Chechenavto was established.
At the beginning of 2017, the production of military vehicles for the special forces Chaborz began at OAO Chechenavto.
