Today's defence vehicles need to be flexible and highly reliable. As military demands can change dramatically in a very short space of time, rapid response capability is crucial.
Boasting military vehicles with proven ability, a multiple role capability and a heritage covering more than 50 years, Land Rover draws upon long-standing and wide-ranging experience in the defence and public security vehicles market sector. The company provides armed forces around the globe with vehicles that are designed to meet a wide range of defence and peacekeeping roles.
The standard military vehicle line-up within Land Rover's range is now based on the Defender heavy-duty 4x4 platform. In addition the Company manufactures Freelander; a compact utility, the Discovery; a popular 4x4 people carrier in the medium utility sector and the Range Rover; the ultimate combination of off-road performance and on-road refinement.
The first vehicle rolled off the production line in 1949. From the same factory in Solihull, in the West-midlands of the United Kingdom, the factory now produces in excess of 160,000 4x4 vehicles each year. Constant evolution
The original Land Rover was developed to meet a military specification in the late 1940s, and has undergone constant evolution and development ever since. All the individual components that go together to make the vehicle have been improved, developed and replaced, as technology, materials and customer requirements have advanced.
Today's Defender is a tough, flexible, multi-platform vehicle. All the derivatives are easy to operate and maintain. The Defender range of base vehicles has proven reliability with a high level of spare-parts commonality. These spare parts can be maintained in Land Rover's global dealer network in more than 100 countries, benefiting from the company's worldwide spare-parts service.
Four Defender core military vehicle platforms are manufactured in the Land Rover factory at Solihull. These include General Service and dedicated Communications vehicles, with 12v or 24v electrical systems. More specialist variants include weapons platforms, ambulances, command vehicles, armour protection to B6+ level and vehicles equipped for marine wading and arctic operations.
Rapid response In recent years, Land Rover has focused on developing specialist variants to satisfy a growing need for rapid response capability. Two such products recently launched by the company are the Rapid Deployment Vehicle (RDV) and the Demountable Armoured System (DAS). Defender Rapid Deployment Vehicle (RDV) |
