On April 6, 2018, the US Army demonstrated an automated mortar system during a multinational training on joint operations at the Gravenwoer training ground in Germany as part of the Robotic Complex Breach Concept demonstration. Earlier this system was tested in the USA in 2015.
An 81-mm automatic mortar system, called the Automated Direct-Indirect Fire Mortar (ADIM), is installed on the HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) tactical vehicle.
ADIM uses recoil devices to reduce the force transmitted to the platform during firing eight times, which allows it to be used on HMMWV (or other light tactical vehicles). This allows to provide fire support for mobile operations.
ADIM's work is automated, so operations that are usually performed by soldiers manually can be carried out using electromechanical drives controlled by the ACS (Actuator Control System) control system, which was also developed by Picatinny engineers and is state technology.
The ACS is controlled by the Automated Fire Control System - Mortar (FCS-M), which is an upgraded version of the M95 field mortar fire control system.
AFCS-M provides loading/unloading control, leveling, aiming and shooting ADIM.
The mortar weighs about 1 ton. It has elevating angles from -3 ° to 85 ° and can fire on the target for a distance of up to 6.3 km. The fire control system provides automatic loading, ballistic calculations, for which it receives data from the on-board meteorological sensor and general gun control.
