South Korean company Hanwha Defense Systems first introduced its new Tigon 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle at the exibition DSA 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Tigon is the successor to the Black Fox armored vehicle, which was developed by Doosan DST and which was purchased by the Indonesian army.
For integration to Tigon, four different weapon systems are offered: a 12.7-mm machine gun and three types of remote-controlled weapon stations (RWS) armed with a 12.7-mm machine gun, a 30-mm automatic gun and a 90-mm gun. The weight of the vehicle varies from 21 tons to 22 tons, depending on what kind of armament is installed on it.
The sample presented at the exhibition, after it was sent for testing in the Malaysian Army. It exhibited at a stand owned by AVP Engineering, a Malaysian company that has been cooperating with Hanwha for a number of years.
The Tigon crew consists of two people, and the vehicle can carry up to nine troops in the rear compartment. It has range up to 1000 km, and equipped with a central tire inflation system.
The Caterpillar C9.3 turbo engine with 525 horsepower, coupled with the Allison 4500SP six-speed automatic transmission, delivers a top speed of 100 km/h and a water speed of 8.5 km/h thanks to water jets. However, the vehicle can not swim in any configuration, this capability is affected by the weapon system and the level of ballistic protection chosen by the user.
If Tigon is chosen by Malaysia, Hanwha will manufacture the hull and subsystems, while AVP Engineering will equip the vehicle and assemble it, which will be part of the technology transfer agreement.
