The MCTX4064 fully automatic transmission has been designed and built as a private venture by Allison Transmission. The overall design objective was to provide a new transmission adaptable to the various engines in the 745 kW power range and meet the needs bf future 40 to 45 tonne tracked vehicles.
The MCTX4064 also fits within the power pack space claim of the existing Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) and the Fighting Vehicle System (FVS). Both of these vehicles, designed and built by United Defense, are used in large numbers by the US Army. The Bradley fighting vehicle is also in service with Saudi Arabia while the FVS, which is used as the platform for the Multiple Launch Rocket System, is used by many countries.
The MCTX4064 design was finalised in 1991 and initial build was completed in mid-1992.
In early 1992 US Army Tank Automotive Command (TACOM) selected the MCTX4064 and the Detroit Diesel 8V-92TA engine for the Medium Integrated Propulsion System (MIPS) demonstrator programme. As of mid-1999 there were no known production applications for this transmission.
The MCTX4064 provides six forward and six reverse gears with electronic range selection controls, hydrostaticaily controlled differential steering and internal, hydraulically applied, multiplate, oil-cooled brakes. Its low-profile design is configured for front or rear drive vehicles with transverse engine mounting.
