The Series 2000 and 4000 were launched late in 1996 and are aimed at the industrial market, although they have a military potential and have been jointly developed by Detroit Diesel of the US and MTU of Germany (see this section).

These are available in a broad range of configurations for maximum application and operating flexibility and are the result of the joint development programme which commenced in September 1994.

With a displacement of two litres per cylinder, the Series 2000 engines are being offered in 8, 12 and 16 cylinder configurations at power ratings of between 400 and 1,800 hp (200 and 1,343 kW) for a wide range of applications.

The 2000 Series features the latest technology in electronically controlled fuel injection for optimised combustion to achieve both a high degree of application flexibility and superior fuel economy at low emission levels.

The Series 4000 family with four litres displacement per cylinder is being offered in 8, 12 and 16 cylinder configurations with a power range from 900 to 3,650 hp (665 to 2,720 kW).
