Development/Description

Late in 1993, the Advanced Systems Division of Israel Military Industries announced that it had developed, to the prototype stage, the Passive Electro-Optical Warning System (PIANO) for land, sea and air platforms.

PIANO is a sophisticated missile detection system that spots incoming threats under day and night conditions so increasing crew survivability. It provides early warning against anti-tank missiles, ground-to-air missiles and air-to-air missiles.

The PIANO'S passive system detects electro-optical emissions from incoming missiles, instantly displays a visual warning and sounds an alert so providing time for the crew and platform to respond. Built-in system intelligence provides extra reliability with a very low false alarm rate.

A single PIANO provides a full 360° detection capability with the adjustable scanning rate supplying the correct level of protection for every platform. PIANO emits no electromagnetic or electro-optical signals that can be identified or tracked by enemy forces.

A low Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) is claimed and PIANO also features durable construction and standardised components which require minimal power. The PIANO device forms a key part of the Israel Military Industries ARPAM technologies demonstrator which is covered in the following entry. There are no known production applications of PIANO although it could well be incorporated on future Israeli MBTs.

More recently, Israel Military Industries have developed the MAJIC-1 (Missile Active Jammer In Combat), details of which are given in the following entry.
