The M1114, developed by the O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt Armoring Company, is the latest Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV) version of the AM General High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) type M1097A2 fitted with an integrated armour system.
This package protects the occupants against assault rifle, overhead fragmentation and blast-type weapons.
So far, 4,500 M1114-series vehicles have been built for the home and export markets and production is expected to continue for some years. AM General delivers the chassis to O'Gara, which then integrates the former's advanced armour package before delivering the completed vehicle to the customer.
The M1114 has been used by the US Army for reconnaissance and patrol duties and has seen service in Somalia, Haiti, the Balkans, Afghanistan and, most recently, in Iraq.
Standard equipment on the M1114 includes an automatic transmission, powered steering, heavy-duty air-conditioning system and splinterproof windows. The driver's windscreen has a heating/defrosting system and is compatible with night-vision equipment.
The M1114 can be fitted with a wide range of weapon systems on the roof, including 7.62mm M240 or 12.7mm M2 machine guns or a MK19 40mm automatic grenade launcher. These can be used in conjunction with an optional gunner's shield.
The US Air Force has a similar vehicle, designated the M1116, for security forces, civil engineer and explosive ordnance disposal for base-recovery operation after attack. A total of 551 have been delivered.
The company also supplied upar-mouring kits for other HMMWVs, including the M1025, M1043 and M1097A2, as well as kits for other 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles.
