Further development of the French Panhard VCR TT 2 (6 × 6) APC, covered in detail in the following entry, has resulted in the Panhard VCR-2 (8 × 8) armoured personnel carrier which has been developed for the export market.
This was one of the original contenders for the Polish wheeled APC competition. Recent information has indicated that this is no longer one of the contenders. Description
In general terms the VCR-2 (8 × 8) is a stretched version of the VCR TT 2 (6 × 6) armoured personnel carrier and would use independent driving wheels with trailing arms and with the lateral transmission under armour.
The first prototypes could be completed within 24 months of the go ahead, according to Panhard.
Weapon fit would depend on mission but various armament options would be offered including turret-mounted 20 mm/25 mm cannon up to two-man turret armed with 90 mm gun.
Steering would be power assisted on the front four wheels and the standard version could ford to a depth of 1.8 m, although an amphibious version would also be offered.
Wherever possible, proven automotive components from existing vehicles already in production would be used to reduce development time and cost as well as reducing total life cycle costs.
Turbo diesel engines and automatic or preselective gearboxes locally manufactured are typical examples of the type of automotive components which could be incorporated into the VCR-2 (8 × 8) family of vehicles. Variants
Panhard has suggested that a complete family of 4 × 4, 6 × 6 and 8 × 8 light armoured vehicles could be developed using the same automotive components.
