IBD has been involved in the design, development and production of armour systems for well over 15 years.
Its current field of activities include materials research, development of advanced materials, development of armour kits and the manufacture of complete armour kits for a wide variety of applications.
Over 5,000 passive armour kits have been produced for tracked and wheeled armoured fighting vehicles. In addition to developing passive armour solutions for a wide range of tracked and wheeled armoured vehicles the company has also developed passive armour solutions for wheeled trucks and many kits have been provided for trucks operating in the former Yugoslavia.
While IBD remains the design authority for all of its armour systems a company called Chempro GmbH was established to undertake production of these systems in Germany.
in addition to supplying complete passive armour kits, IBD now offer a complete signature control package which includes numerical evaluation, material design, laboratory test, signature analysis, computer simulation, final measurements and the building of prototype systems.
IBD has also added transparent armourto its product range as well as advanced light, medium and heavy mine protection kits.
IBD has also established a number of partners (P) and licensees (L) all over the world.
IBD developed the MEXAS family of passive armour systems for a wide range of applications. The range includes:
For light tracked and wheeled vehicles. Typical examples include 50 systems installed on Swedish Pbv 302 APCs for use in Bosnia and 95 systems installed on Canadian M113 full-tracked armoured personnel carriers and Cougar/Grizzly (6x6) light armoured vehicles deployed to Bosnia.
As well as the above, IBD has developed a MEXAS light armour system for soft skinned vehicles and these have been fitted to Scania trucks operating in the former Yugoslavia.
Forprotection against RPG-7 type weapons which have a High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead. This is installed on light and medium vehicles.
This has been designed for use on MBTs and other armoured vehicles.
All of these MEXAS armour systems can be used in conjunction with the IBD 503 ballistic liner which provides a further increase in protection levels. There are three protection levels:
(1) 7.62 mm AP, 152/155 mm fragments, 15 m 14.5 mm AP, frontal arc 60 to 180
(2) additional 12.7 mm AP/14.5mm AP, through 360°, 152 mm/155 mm fragments, 10 m
(3) additional 30 mm AP/APDS/APFSDS/84 mm HEAT.
MEXAS consists of passive add-on armour modules which can be quickly attached to the vehicle, for an M113 series vehicle the system weighs around 500 kg. Weight of each module does not exceed 30 kg.
According to the manufacturer the main advantages of the MEXAS system can be summarised as follows:
(1) mission dependent, expandable protection
(2) compatibility of the add-on armour with virtually all basic structures of armoured vehicles
(3) capability for fast upgrade of vehicles to the reguired protection level
(4) high multihit capability
(5) field repair and upgrade with standard troop tools.
